I've been making my own powdered sugar now for quite some time. It saves money and it saves you from eating GMO sugar beets.
Powdered sugar is so easy. It takes a little time, so I like to make a lot of it at once and store it in a jar for later.
All you do is put sugar in your blender!
I love discovering things that I can make at home. The more you know, the more equipt you are for making masterpieces in the kitchen.
It looks like a blizard; it's awesome!
I usually put in about a 1/2 cup of sugar at a time. If you put to much in at once it will take forever to become powder. I mean forever. And ever. Amen.
It takes about three minutes for the 1/2 cup to become powder. After it looks like the blender has done all it can, I pour the sugar into a sifter over a bowl to catch the larger crystles that didn't turn into powder, leaving me with the finest powder in the bowl.

I also have noticed that homemade powdered sugar is much sweeter then the store bought stuff. So when I come across a recipe that calls for 2 cups of powdered sugar I can easily get away with one. Not that I'd use that much sugar anyway!
Another tip is to add some kind of starch to your finished powder. I usually add arrow root powder or organic cornstarch.
If you've ever looked on the back of a store powdered sugar bag, you'll see they add quite a bit of starch.
I find adding the starch helps my glazes and icings hold together more and keep my sugar from being way to sweet.
So there you have it! Get equipt and make some powdered sugar!
